For my second concentration piece, I drew my cousin Jessica. I like this picture of her because it expresses her personality along with facial similarities to my sister and I. From my first piece I knew what I was doing with her skin for the most part. She had more value under her neck and needed darker shading. The hair was the last thing that I did because that is the most challenging part to me. I am pleased with how it turned out with the highlights. The shading on her neck was a challenge because it was darker than everything else. I still plan to go back and add some different values there. Along with some in her hair. I think the contrast between her light shading and the dark backpack strap improves this piece. I plan to add value to her shirt, arms, and shoulders as well. One challenge I had was with the left eye (when you're looking at the piece.) From the photograph you couldn't see any detail, but I felt like since I zoomed in on the photo that I should show detail. I talked to some of my peers and we agreed to not show detail and I like the way that it turned out. I also like how dark the eyes are, I think it helps compliment the backpack. I really like how this piece turned out and I'm excited to see how the rest of these pieces do as well. I plan to go and fix the value details and I will post another picture of the final when I am done!
For my concentration, I am focusing on the facial expressions of my family members. I am planning to draw pictures of a variety of ages; from the youngest to my grandparents. I am very excited for this concentration. I started with my cousin Alex. I am actually very pleased with how this turned out. I still have a few things that I want to add and change to the piece. I want to work a little more on his shirt and make it look really realistic. I also need to work on the shadows and the value in his hair. This piece looks better in person to me, but my goal was to make each piece look as realistic as I could. I worked very hard on the skin, trying to make it look as 2D as I could. Value is something I will continue to work on and learn so that I can make these pieces even better as the year progresses. This was one of the most tedious pieces of art that I have, only because I wanted to make sure I got every little detail that I could. I don't really know how to do hair, so I may practice some and then come back and fix his. I also want to make the strokes in his shirt a lot neater which I plan to do as well. I honestly am happy with how this turned out, and am excited to do more and see how all my concentration pieces turn out!!
For one of our projects we were to paint a landscape. While I was in Ohio, I took pictures of the land around my Grandma's house. I chose this land because its pretty and it has meaning to me. I liked this picture and was excited for the outcome of it but I was not looking forward to the painting part. For some reason I don't like painting as much as I like drawing. But I took my time and did my best with this piece. It took a while to plan out what I should do first and last because everything over laid each other. I started with the big green trees in the background. Some of the challenging things were putting the snow on the trees, and trying to get the green, tire path to look right. That was the most stressful part, trying to get the grass to look like it was showing through the snow. I am still not 100% satisfied with it but I think it looks as good as it's going to get. I was very challenged with this piece because I'm not good at painting and I also am not good at trees. That was a huge challenge in this piece but I like how it turned out for the most part. I really liked how the right side of the painting turned out. I like the barn and the trees that are over there. I wasn't sure how everything would look when I was finished, but for me not liking painting I think it turned out pretty well. The snow was definitely challenging and I'm glad I pushed myself through this piece. I hope to continue painting so that I can practice because eventually I want to grow and become better at it.
For one of our projects we had to do portraits of our pets. I liked this project because I was able to do art that had a meaning to me. It was difficult to know where to start laying down the texture. This piece had a variety of textures. I started my dog doing her nose first. I knew that would be an area that would be good to get done with first and I was also unsure about how to start the fur. I paid a lot of attention to the texture along with the highlights on the top of her nose. I noticed that it seemed to look like small circles with the highlight at the top. The nose definitely took some time but I was satisfied with how it turned out. I then went to the fur. The fur was challenging as well because I wanted it to look like fur but I also wanted it to be dark enough so that you couldn't see much of the paper behind it. It took a while as well, especially the face because of her gray spots. For the gray parts, I would just layer the paper in white prisma and then with a light gray or brown, draw lines over that area. The mouth and chin were probably two of the most challenging places on her face but I like how they turned out. Her body was difficult as well. I still make go back in and try to make the fur not look as unified. The collar wasn't too difficult either. I may still go back in and give some more highlights to the black plastic and give some shadow to the red cloth.
I am very satisfied with how this piece turned out. I feel like this picture captures her personality well. I may go back in and change some things but overall I'm done! |
