For this piece, our topic was mechanical nature. When I first started thinking about this assignment I did not like it all. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I decided that I wanted to do an animal of some type because I enjoy drawing the animals. Adding the mechanics is what I dreaded because I didn't feel like that was my style. I decided to do an owl, and I knew I wanted to add gears and chains as the mechanical part. I think the outcome of this project turned out better than what I thought it would. I used prismacolored pencils, using mostly the gold and silver to do the metals. I added some yellows and browns to deepen and lighten the metals. For the feathers, I used basic neutral colors; black, white, brown, and cream. Because the rest of the picture is so neutral in colors, the eyes complete the piece in my opinion. I used a reference of an owl to see what color eyes they had, but I wanted to make them more bold so I added a touch of red towards to top of the eyes. I am very pleased with the outcome of this piece, and think it turned out better than I had expected.
There were a couple of things that I struggled with. Making perfect circles for the gears, and also where to place each gear. It was difficult to know where each should go and how to place them together. The shapes and edges of them were difficult as well. The metals as a whole were probably the most difficult thing for me, the drawing and the shading. I like how they turned out though. I also struggled with the feathers and trying to keep the pencils sharpened so that there would be fine lines for each feather, which took me a long time. This project was tedious, but I am pleased. I enjoyed this project because it stretched my brain. This isn't something I would do on my own so I liked that it expanded my horizons a little bit.
