For my everyday object I decided to paint acorns. Our medium to use was oil paint and I was trying to think of something that would have texture. Simple objects always stand out to me because you can do so much with them. When I decided that I wanted to paint acorns, I went outside but I couldn't find any so I ended up having to buy some. I then went on my front porch and arranged them in a pile and took a bunch of pictures from different angles. When I started painting them I not only wanted them to pop out using their normal colors, but I went and added bright orange and red to bring out some of the highlights. I used a variety of browns and greys to do the majority of the acorns. For the background, I tried to make it look like it was on a type of wood but I wish that would have turned out a little better. I may go and add a little more detail when I can. I also spent a lot of time creating shadows between the acorns. This part was very difficult for me because I was scared of going too dark too quickly. I think in the end now that I look back on it, I could have made them even darker.
While working I came across a problem. I did not know how to paint the top of acorns. I tried different ways and finally got it the way that I liked it. I used a very small brush and made my own strokes where I wanted them, adding brights on one side and darks on the other to show shadows. I really liked the way that the top of the acorns came out. Another thing I struggled with is the shadows. If I could go back and change anything, I would add more to the back ground and make the shadows deeper. In the end though I really liked how they turned out!
